A community conservancy in Bulawayo offering trails, nature, family activities and quiet outdoor space.
Hillside Dams Conservancy is one of Bulawayo’s best-known outdoor spaces, combining walking routes, granite landscapes, water, birdlife and community conservation. It offers a different experience from the city centre: quieter, more spacious and best approached with time rather than as a brief photo stop.
What to do
Visitors come for walks, nature, family time and the landscape itself. Choose a route suited to your group and the weather. Rock surfaces and paths can be uneven, and water levels vary with the season.
Plan before arrival
The official site lists daily opening from 06:00 to 18:00, but confirm current access, fees and activity arrangements before travelling. Take water, sun protection and appropriate footwear. Do not assume that every area is suitable for swimming or unsupervised play.
Conservation first
Carry waste out, avoid disturbing wildlife and follow instructions from the conservancy. Do not remove plants, stones or cultural material. Community-supported spaces remain healthy when visitors treat them as shared environments rather than disposable recreation sites.
For groups and families
Agree a meeting point, keep children close around rocks and water, and select a shorter route if heat or fatigue becomes a concern. Schools and organised groups should contact the conservancy in advance.
